New age dancehall’s newest lady stepped onto the scene in 2016. At just 20 years old, her single “Jiggle Jiggle” was released. Later on that year she grew more popularity when she scored a feature with dancehall king Vybz Kartel, the single “Loodi” gained instant popularity. Signed to Jamaica's upcoming major label, RomeichEntertainment she has hopped on multiple riddims each year since being an artist. This has helped Miss Lee gain a strong fan base called #ShenYengz, hence the name of her 2018 hit, "Shen Yeng Anthem."
I came across Shenseea in late 2016, when the video for "Loodi" popped up as a suggestion on my YouTube. I quickly fell in love. As a Jamaican-American, dancehall has always had a special place in my heart. There hasn't been a young break out face in the female dancehall industry in a while, so Shenseea was definitely a breath of fresh air. Most OG dancehall queens like Lady Saw and Spice have been around for years so seeing someone from my generation was refreshing. Shenseea's veteran's freestyle with BBC's OneExtra really showcases her talent. She pays homage to dancehall and reggae legends such as Buju Banton, Beenie Man, and Yellowman while spitting on the legendary “Eight Five” riddim.
Shenseea prides herself on her versatility. She can freestyle on a dancehall beat, sing over a reggae riddim and rap on a trap song. The Kingston-born artist has performed for crowds from Italy to LA and her ShenYengz continue to grow. In a recent interview with TeenVogue, the deejay stated, “I’m not trying to emulate anyone’s trajectory,” she says, opting to be a trailblazer of her own.Shenseea sees herself as apart of how the new crossover dancehall sound should be defined from an authentic Jamaican perspective, as opposed to the that have entered the space in the American markets. She’s doing all of this while raising her 3 year old son, Rajeiro.
Her most recent single and first song released with Interscope records, "Blessed ft Tyga" has been her breakthrough onto American charts. With over 23M views on YouTube and reached #1 on the US reggae charts. And as a reward for her loyal ShenYengz, she has created the #blessedchallenge. The challenge encourages upcoming artists to showcase their talents on the "Blessed" beat. Her favorites get reposted onto her page and based on interaction the winner is chosen.
